Question by Showdown: How does a 17 hour flight from kansas city to rio de janeiro work?
If Im flying south, and its a 17 hour flight, how does that work with the earth making its turn every 24 hours? Expedia says its a 17hour flight. Leave 1100am and arrive 700am. So,does a pilot just fly south, and allow the earth to move and Bam! land in Rio or does he fly south to south west, adjusting to the earths change? Dumb,no super dumb question, but it has perplexed me!
Wow, glad to hear Im not the only one thats slightly puzzled by this, lol. My best guestimation would be that the plane flies south, yet with the rotation of the earth. 17 hours in air will definately leave time for the earth to continue to spin, it cant just fly directly south or I assume it would end up in the Atlantic or Africa, but thats just a guess. Hopefully someone has a legitimate answer for me or Ill be up all night questioning this… Thanks for the replys…

It is NOT a dumb question…in fact I have never thought about this, but would be interested to know. I saw a program once that explained how routes are planned, cousre I can’t begin to remember or explain it. Hope someone with the technical knowledge answers you. I’m sure it is done by computers now.

09 Sep 2010 Q&A: Parati or Buzios for day trip from Rio de Janeiro?
 |  Category: Accomodation  | Tags: , , , ,  | 3 Comments

Question by take_me_to_the_beach: Parati or Buzios for day trip from Rio de Janeiro?
I will be in Rio de Janeiro for 10 – 11 days during their summer season. I want to leave Rio for 1 – 2 days and go to Parati or Buzios or maybe some other coastal town. I basically want to visit a beautiful coastal town that is small, charming and hopefully less touristy than Copa, Ipanema, etc. Of course, I’d need to rent a hotel room for 1 – 2 nights and need to find a way to get to whichever place I go to.

How long does it take to get to Buzios or Parati by bus and how much does it cost? Which place to you think I should go to?

Any assistance or recommendations would be appreciated! I know very little about these places but have had them recommended to me.
Oh, by the way, I’m not staying at a hotel in Rio. Thus, I don’t have easy access to packages to various destinations. I’d probably just make the arrangements on my own.

Ah, i dont know which one to pick..Parati is wonderful, and Buzios is wornderful too,, but i think Parati has less tourist..they are there, but less and i think more of Brazilian tourists..Buzios is a totally different direction..and should be a wonderful trip too, in terms of what you can see from the window.. If you are goind either places, you will have to go to Rodoviaria Novo Rio and take the bus from there..From wherever you are in Zona Sul, you can take a community bus there for about R$ 2.00.. When you get to your destination, look for pousadas, something like a bed and breakfast..Hope everything goes well and enjoy my city.. PS. Actually, on the way to Paraty, you can go to the famous Ilha Grande on the way, but for that you will need about two days…By the way, depending where you are, you wont have to go to Rio’ s main bus terminal i mentioned above..just go to Avenida Brazil to take the bus to Parati, and on this trip, you will see much more very small town beaches ..

09 Sep 2010 Q&A: Transportation in Rio de Janeiro, from the airport?

Question by Marcial W: Transportation in Rio de Janeiro, from the ?
In one month I will be going to Rio de Janeiro. I would like to know what are my options for transportation between the International and Hotel Intercontinental… having in consideration that I will be arriving to the at 21:45 hrs (late night time).

If there are several options, how expensive are they? and how safe too?.

In advance, Thanks for your help

3 good options and some tips:

1) Real Auto ônibus – executive bus service. You will probably see a line as soon as you go outdoors. Usually reliable, but I am not sure if itwill be working that late. Price: about R$ 6

2) Yellow taxis from Aerocoop – you will see a line of yellow taxis when you go outdoors. Price: around R$ 50 (measured by the taxi clock)

3) Special taxis from the booths inside the terminal (blue, red or white taxis). Fixed price around R$ 85.

Actually the best way would be to have a tour guide driving you from the , because he will be able to explain about the best places where to go, and also the places where you should not go.
By the way, the hotel where you will stay is a good hotel in a very bad area. I usually only recommend Ipanema and Leblon (except Sheraton Leblon). If you stay in Sao Conrado, you will need taxis to go to any place (nothing located near the hotel, and the beach in front of it is VERY polluted).

Another tip: use mosquitoes repelent ALL THE TIME, because the area where you will stay is getting really bad with dengue fever.

08 Sep 2010 Can an American w/ a tourist visa in Brazil (while staying in Br) buy a 2 wk ticket (2-way) from Br to US?
 |  Category: Flight  | Tags: , , , , , , ,  | One Comment

Question by Esther H: Can an American w/ a tourist visa in Brazil (while staying in Br) buy a 2 wk ticket (2-way) from Br to US?
My husband has to spend 4 months in Brazil with me (he is American and has a tourist visa to Brazil). I am Brazilian (living in US). If he departures from US end of may and returns to US end of Sep he can use American Airlines an award ticket (40K miles for low season). But in the meanwhile he might need to come back to US for 2 weeks by July. As a tourist in Brazil is he allowed to buy a 2-way ticket Brazil-US-Brazil? He would still have the return of the first mileage ticket in hands to show authorities. Thank you!
I got an answer from the Brazilian consulate in LA: “No, a foreigner in Brazil holding a tourist visa is only allowed to buy a USA/Brasil/USA ticket”.
It’s still interesting that, from Brazil we bought tickets to Argentina and came back… Brazil/Argentina/Brazil. Anyways, we probably won’t risk and follow the Consulate’s advice.

I would think that if his visa for Brazil is a multiple entry visa, he could leave and return. If it is a single entry visa, he would have to get a new visa to return to Brazil. The Brazilian embassy would be the best place to ask.
